Office Illness

There’s always that one daunting sound in the office that makes any employee cringe: the cough.  After hearing a coworker cough, the fear of contracting the illness begins to settle in.  Presenteeism is defined as the practice of coming to work despite illness, which can result in reduced productivity.  Managers should realize that presenteeism outweighs absenteeism because you have to factor in reduced productivity, uncharged sick days, and endangering employees.  A survey conducted in 2008 by LifeCare revealed that twenty-nine percent of employees who are sick that show up to work do so because they feel that other people depend on them.  Other responses were:

  • Too risky to take time off (office politics/culture) — 26%
  • Too busy to stay home — 15%
  • I save my sick days for childcare/eldercare emergencies — 12%
  • I save my sick days for vacation time — 8%
  • I do not work when I'm sick — 7%
  • Other — 3%

Any sickness brought in by an employee can be prevented if you take the necessary precautions in maintaining a sanitized office.  A professional cleaning company will make your office cleaner and safer for your employees.

The office is swarming with bacteria and viruses in various places such as:

  • The carpet where germs can be found, which is brought in through shoes.  Anything that touches your employee’s shoes also touches your carpet.  A professional office cleaning company will provide proper maintenance by keeping your floors shampooed and vacuumed.
  • The office bathroom is an area that is high in germs.  It is important to have all toilets, fixtures, sinks, and knobs sanitized.
  • Everyone in the office touches a doorknob that is usually metal.  The metal attracts more germs and it is important that proper maintenance is used.
  • The office kitchen may be one of the worst areas considering the amount of food that may lie around the area.  The refrigerator, microwave, stove, and kitchen sink all contain germs that need to be cleaned.

Hiring a professional office cleaning company is a must.  Proper maintenance of the facility is too much to ask for from your employees and it takes time away from actual work that needs to be done. A professional office cleaning company will maintain a sanitary work environment and give you that peace of mind. The best way to prevent any sickness in the office is to promote a cleaner workspace. Managers need to stress the importance of proper maintenance of their workplace such as: using a disinfectant wipe on your computer mouse, keyboard, phone, and desk. Managers also need to provide sanitizers throughout the office to keep their employees healthy.  A professional office cleaning company can provide all of these janitorial supplies.
