Disarray in commercial real estate markets followed after Standard and Poor's expected but nevertheless staggering move to downgrade the U.S. debt ratings. The impact of the downgrade on commercial real estate will likely be multi-faceted. Yet the larger impact for commercial real estate could be felt on the demand side, at least in the near term. The shock to the system will likely only increase hesitancy to invest and hire workers among companies and consumers already hesitant to spend.

CAL/OSHA Compliance: Hazard Communication Log

CAL OSHA requires all employers to identify hazardous substances, label them, and train all employees in proper storage, use, and handling techniques. In order to prevent injury and reduce risk for employees & employers it is imperative that companies establish an effective hazard communication program. The standard operating procedure requires California employers whose employees may be exposed to hazardous substances to provide information on each hazardous chemical and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) for ever hazardous chemical. The training provisions of the Hazard Communication Program are not satisfied solely by giving employees the data sheets to read. An employer's training program is to be a forum for explaining not only the hazards of the chemicals in their work area, but also how to use the information generated in the hazard communication program. #Ground-breaking California Law: Carpet Recycling Program

A carpet recycling law went into effect the first of July.  California AB 2398 is the nation's first carpet-specific recycling law which stipulates that all carpet sold or shipped into California must include a $0.05/square yard assessment. The requirements will serve to raise consumer awareness and to increase the amount of carpet that is diverted and recycled from California landfills.

CalRecycle will provide oversight for the AB 2398 program.
