The U.S. Department of Energy says pump prices this spring and summer will average $3.70 with a barrel of oil averaging $102.

Higher productivity cuts jobs now, pays off in long term
One reason U.S. employers are hiring slowly and unemployment is at 9% more than 18 months into the recovery is that employers are increasing productivity. Services firms and manufacturers alike cut their staffs sharply in the recession as sales plunged, and they found ways to do more with fewer workers.
Productivity is the economy's output per labor hour. It typically falls sharply early in recessions as companies hold on to workers even as output falls on the belief they'll need them in the upswing. But in recent downturn and the 2001 slump, employers slashed in anticipation of falling sales and then kept cutting, wringing more from each employee and boosting profits even as sales grew modestly. More than two-thirds of businesses are strengthening their commitment to sustainability according to a new study. This is the second annual study that the two have put together, and the new study is based on data gathered from more than 3,100 corporate leaders representing every major industry and region of the world. A commitment to sustainability can pay dividends: Nearly 50% of survey respondents said 'improved brand reputation' is perceived as the biggest benefit of aggressively addressing sustainability issues.
