Minimum wage workers in California will have seen a dollar increase in their hourly pay starting this past January, moving the minimum wage from $9.00 to $10.00 an hour. For the City of Los Angeles, this is just the beginning of a series of increases that will raise the minimum wage in increments until it reaches $15.00 an hour in January of 2020. Our neighboring cities of Long Beach, Santa Monica, and Pasadena are adopting similar plans, with Glendale keeping close watch and considering the raise as well.
While this is great news for those currently employed in minimum wage jobs, there is some apprehension that raising the minimum wage may also increase the cost of goods and services. This is to be expected and the final wage rate of $15.00 an hour was settled upon with this in mind; at this dollar rate, minimum wage workers will be raised above the poverty line while also keeping payroll costs as low as possible for employers.
